PA 4-on-4 Football Tournament 2007
 |
|
The People’s Assocation 4-on-4 Football Tournament 2007 was held on Saturday, 14th April 2007 at Fico Sports Hub. The competition saw more than 100 teams competing in 4 categories, namely: Men’s Open (aged 21 to 35 years old), Under 20’s Men (aged 17 to 20), Under 16’s Men (aged 14 to 16) and Ladies’ Open (aged 14 and above). The Guest-of-Honour for the day was FAS President Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, who is also the Senior Minister of State for Law & Home Affairs and MP for Nee Soon East. Along with him, Deputy President of FAS Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore CDC also graced the occasion. The event started at around 2.30pm with a mass warmup session and some ice-breaker games. The opening match saw some children from West Coast CSC playing an exhibition match. The children were an absolute delight to watch, and the match also saw A/P Ho involved as the referee. A/P Ho is a keen footballer who used to captain his school, college and University teams. The format of the tournament adopted a unique queuing and accumulative points system. Teams taking part for the different categories would queue up outside their courts to wait for their matches. The winning team for each match would get to stay in the court (for a maximum of 3 consecutive matches) to take on the next team in the queue, while the losing team would simply rejoin the queue to wait for their turn again. Teams chalk up points from every match they won, and the teams with the most points at the end of the day would be crowned as winners of their respective categories. Members of the Young Lions squad also came down to play a celebrity exhibition match. It was certainly a treat for everyone present, as the players’ every touch was greeted with loud cheers from their supporters. It was hours filled with exciting action in the courts, and there was a carnival-like atmosphere despite the competitive nature of the tournament. Football is certainly a sport well-loved by the community, across the different ages, races, genders and backgrounds. The event concluded some time after 7pm, and regardless of whether they had medals to show for it at the end of it, everyone left with winning smiles on their faces. - by CHONG CHUN LIAN |
