FAS Centres of Excellence Futbol Fiesta 2007

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Centres of Excellence (COE) Futbol Fiesta 2007 was held on Saturday, 31st March 2007 at Fico Sports Hub. Equipment and refreshments for the event were sponsored by Lotto, Canadian 241 Pizza, Ole Energy Drink and Warburg Vending.
The FAS Futbol Fiesta provided an excellent opportunity for members of the youth development family to get together and interact in a competitive yet carnival-like atmosphere ahead of the 2007 COE season. About 600 people comprising of young footballers, parents, coaches and officials graced the occasion where our young talented players got to showcase their skills in a modified format of four-a-side exhibition matches.
Quite fittingly, the occasion also marked the introduction of the AFC Green Card. The Green Card is an initiative by the AFC to recognize and applaud fair play efforts by players. In his opening address, Guest-of-Honor FAS Vice-President Mr. Lim Kia Tong urged the young players present to observe the spirit of fair play in the game.
Mr. Lim also remarked that Fico Sports Hub was a "truly impressive facility" and stated his hope for more similar events to be held at the Sports Hub in the future.
The competition saw teams representing Balestier Khalsa, COE North, Geylang United, Gombak United, Home United, NFA U-17s, Sengkang Punggol, SAFFC, Singapore Cricket Club and Tampines Rovers taking part. The event started at around 9am in the morning, and though it started raining midway through, the playing conditions, as well as the high spirits of the players, were not hampered thanks to the tensile roofs that provided shelter over the pitches. Despite their young ages, the boys displayed immense amounts of talent and passion for the Beautiful Game. Some of them could juggle the ball like Ronaldinho, some could dribble like Cristiano Ronaldo, and some others showed the kind of clinical finishing Alan Shearer would have been proud of. In this "smaller" version of football, our young players certainly showed a lot of promise with their amazing ball control and technique. And who knows, some of these boys may turn out to be our next Fandi or Alam Shah in the next few years! - by CHONG CHUN LIAN |
